Russia has announced the successful test of its nuclear-powered, nuclear-capable underwater drone, the Poseidon.
This development has drawn sharp scrutiny from military analysts and defiance toward the United States, which had previously criticized Russia’s testing of new atomic weapons systems.
The Poseidon: A ‘Super Torpedo’ Threat
Military experts view the Poseidon as a “super torpedo” with catastrophic potential. Analysts believe the drone is designed to destroy coastal areas by generating massive, radioactive ocean swells. This capability makes it a unique and destructive force in naval warfare.
Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrated the trial, calling the Poseidon test a “huge success.” He highlighted its capabilities:
- Unmatched Performance: The drone torpedo possesses unmatched speed and operational depth, making it incredibly difficult to track.
- Interception: Putin claimed there is “no way to intercept it” with current defense technology.
- Massive Power: The power output of the Poseidon “significantly exceeds that of even our most advanced intercontinental-range missile, Sarmat.”
Testing Continues Despite US Disapproval
The successful Poseidon test follows another recent nuclear weapons demonstration. Days earlier, President Putin personally oversaw the trial of the Burevestnik cruise missile, which he claims has an “unlimited range.”
These military exercises proceed despite direct criticism from US President Donald Trump. Trump had characterized the testing of a new nuclear system as “not appropriate.”
Furthermore, Trump recently cancelled a planned summit with Putin in Budapest, citing the Russian leader’s unwillingness to compromise on the war in Ukraine.
Military analysts view this flurry of weapons testing as a clear statement: Russia will not be swayed by Western pressure regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
Instead, it is signaling a sustained commitment to modernizing its nuclear and conventional defense capabilities.
