The head of Africa’s biggest refinery intends to boost output to 1.4 million barrels daily.
This would more than double the current 650,000 barrels processed each day.
Location and Owner
The facility, owned by Aliko Dangote, operates in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial center. Dangote, the continent’s wealthiest individual, shared the vision with media on Sunday.
Once finished, the site would become the world’s largest single-location refinery, overtaking India’s Jamnagar complex.
Nigeria’s Oil Paradox
Despite being a leading crude producer, Nigeria relies heavily on imported fuels. State refineries suffer from decades of neglect and run at minimal levels.
The private refinery began operations in January 2024, supplying local and export markets.
Need for Expansion
Dangote cited rising fuel demand across Africa and globally as the driver. “This shows faith in Nigeria, the continent, and our energy independence,” he stated.
Growth will depend on external capital, though details remain limited.
Timeline Uncertainty
Analyst Ikemesit Effiong from SBM Intelligence noted the project’s ambition but cautioned on scheduling and funding clarity.
Decade-Long Journey
The $19 billion facility required nearly 10 years to reach initial production.
Success could transform regional energy security and reduce import dependency
