US President Donald Trump has announced plans to hold another high-level meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a social media post, Trump revealed that Budapest, Hungary, is being considered as the host city for the talks. While the exact date remains unconfirmed, the announcement has already drawn global attention due to the potential diplomatic impact.
Renewed Push for Peace in Ukraine
The move follows a recent phone conversation between Trump and Putin, signaling Washington’s renewed effort to directly engage Moscow. According to White House sources, this upcoming meeting could mark a turning point in diplomatic efforts to end the war.
Trump is also expected to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House in the coming weeks, underscoring the urgency of the situation and the administration’s intent to balance talks between both warring sides.
Hungary Welcomes the Proposal
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a close ally of Trump, welcomed the proposal. In a post on X, Orbán described the planned meeting as “a step toward peace” and confirmed Hungary’s readiness to serve as host.
Some Budapest residents also expressed optimism. Local citizen György Szirmai called the initiative a “promising development,” suggesting that Hungary could help mediate discussions toward a peaceful settlement.
Ukraine Seeks Stronger Military Support
While peace efforts continue, President Zelenskyy remains firm in his call for advanced weapons to help Ukraine strike further into Russian-held territories.
He argues that stronger military capabilities will force Moscow to take negotiations seriously. The upcoming White House meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy will likely center on this demand and the future of US assistance to Kyiv.
Hungary’s Divisive Position in the War
Hungary’s stance on the conflict remains controversial. Unlike most European Union members that have backed Ukraine with weapons and aid, Orbán’s government has taken a different route.
Budapest has refused to send arms or allow their transport through its borders. Instead, Orbán continues to advocate for easing sanctions on Russia, a move that has strained relations with other EU nations and Ukraine.
Resident Viktor Erbin voiced doubts about Hungary’s influence, saying, “Hungary doesn’t have the power to shape major outcomes.” He also criticized Orbán’s alignment with Moscow, arguing that Europe’s and America’s backing remain essential for Ukraine’s defense.
What Lies Ahead for Global Diplomacy
As Trump readies for talks with both Putin and Zelenskyy, the world watches closely. The Budapest summit could either pave the way for fresh peace efforts or deepen existing divisions among world powers.
The results of these meetings are expected to influence not only the future of the Ukraine conflict but also the broader direction of US-Russia relations and European diplomacy.
