Mahmood Yakubu, outgoing INEC chairman, transferred leadership to May Agbamuche-Mbu as acting chairman on Tuesday. The announcement came during a meeting with electoral commissioners in Abuja.
Support for New Head
Yakubu urged INEC staff to support Agbamuche-Mbu until a permanent chairman is appointed. President Bola Tinubu will nominate a successor, subject to Senate confirmation.
Yakubu’s Decade in Office
Appointed in 2015 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, Yakubu served two five-year terms. His reappointment in 2020 made him the first to hold the role consecutively.
Digital Transformation Highlighted
In his farewell, Yakubu emphasized INEC’s digital advancements, including biometric voter registration and electronic result systems. “We built a foundation for credible elections,” he said.
Gratitude to Stakeholders
Yakubu thanked political parties, peace groups, security agencies, media, and NYSC members, calling them “patriotic election officials” for their vital contributions.
New Electoral Publications
He launched two books, “Election Management in Nigeria 2015–2025” and “Electoral Technology Innovations 2015–2025,” available on INEC’s website, documenting his tenure’s achievements.
Continuity Ahead
Agbamuche-Mbu’s interim leadership ensures INEC’s ongoing mission. Yakubu’s reforms set the stage for Nigeria’s future elections.
