Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty revealed that a US team, headed by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, will participate in discussions between Israel and Hamas.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday in Sharm el-Sheikh. The goal is to advance the initial stage of President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the Gaza conflict.
Focus on Ceasefire and Exchanges
Abdelatty, speaking at a Cairo press event, outlined the priorities. Talks center on securing a truce, freeing Israeli captives, and releasing Palestinian detainees.
Additionally, participants are reviewing maps for Israeli troop pullbacks in the opening phase.
Aid and Security Measures
The agenda includes ensuring unrestricted humanitarian assistance to Gaza via UN channels. Abdelatty emphasized creating a robust security framework.
This would facilitate a full Israeli withdrawal from the territory over time.
Trump’s Optimism
On Monday, President Trump expressed confidence in a breakthrough. “There’s a strong possibility for agreement between Hamas and Israel,” he stated.
His plan seeks to halt hostilities and address long-standing tensions.
Grim Conflict Background
The talks coincide with Israel’s remembrance of the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault that claimed 1,200 lives. Israel’s response has resulted in over 67,000 Palestinian deaths, per Gaza’s Health Ministry data.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The military operations have uprooted nearly 90% of Gaza’s 2 million residents, many repeatedly. Aid blockades have worsened food shortages, leading to famine in Gaza City, as noted by specialists.
Hopes for Progress
These negotiations represent a critical effort to de-escalate the crisis. Success could pave the way for broader peace, easing suffering and fostering stability in the region.
