In September 2025, Nigerian designer Alphadi held a masterclass at Rome’s Academy of Fashion.

Timed with the UN’s World Cotton Day on October 7, the event showcased African cotton. Alphadi mentored 14 students, fusing African and Italian design elements.

Crafting Unique Designs

Known as the “Magician of the Desert,” Alphadi guided students to create seven distinct cotton-based pieces. “African cotton has global appeal, from Sahel to Europe,” he said. His work underscores Africa’s fashion influence.

Cultural Fusion Insights

Student Cecilia Marchesini described the workshop as eye-opening. “Alphadi’s approach bridged our cultures, revealing shared threads,” she noted. As a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Alphadi sparked creative innovation.

World Cotton Day Origins

African nations championed October 7 as World Cotton Day in 2021. FAO economist El Mamoun Amrouk said, “It highlights Africa’s cotton sector and its global reach.” The day promotes cotton’s economic value.

Cotton’s Economic Role

Cotton sustains millions of jobs in developing nations, boosting exports and growth. World Cotton Day emphasizes its impact on trade and poverty alleviation across over 80 countries.

Sustainability in Fashion

The FAO partnered with fashion leaders to trace cotton’s path from fields to catwalks. This collaboration promotes sustainable economies and inspires young designers. Alphadi’s masterclass highlighted cotton’s cultural and versatile potential.

Lasting Impact

Alphadi’s session reinforced African cotton’s global significance. By blending traditions, it paved the way for innovative, sustainable fashion, leaving a lasting mark on students and the industry.
