Hundreds of Haitians gathered in Port-au-Prince on Saturday to honor eight victims, including four children, killed in last month’s Haiti drone attack on Cité Soleil. The strike on September 20 targeted an alleged gang leader and left nine people dead and 17 injured, according to Doctors Without Borders, which treated the survivors.
Mourning in Cité Soleil
Explosions ripped through Cité Soleil, one of Haiti’s poorest and most crowded neighborhoods. The Viv Ansanm gang coalition, which controls the area, was recently labeled a foreign terrorist group by the United States. Activists and residents accused the police of carrying out the drone strike, but officials have not confirmed the claim. The funeral, held in a small park, turned chaotic when a bird flew overhead. Many mourners mistook it for another drone and fled in panic, showing how deeply the trauma remains.
Families Face Unbearable Loss
Among those mourning was Claudia Bobrun, a 30-year-old mother who lost her 8-year-old daughter, Samira Nelson. Samira had been playing with friends when the strike hit. “She loved to dance and laugh,” her mother said, holding back tears. Community leaders helped the family cover funeral costs. Another grieving mother, Jislene Statune, lost her eldest daughter and two grandchildren in the attack. Her daughter, a 32-year-old vendor, was the family’s main source of income. The loss, she said, left them broken and uncertain about the future.
Haiti’s Spiraling Crisis
The attack highlights the worsening violence that has gripped Haiti since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Armed groups now control nearly 90% of Port-au-Prince and continue to expand into nearby towns. Kidnappings, sexual violence, and looting have become common. Over 1.3 million Haitians have fled their homes, and hunger grows daily.
In response, the United Nations Security Council approved the creation of a 5,550-member Gang Suppression Force led by Kenya. The new mission has authority to arrest and detain gang members, aiming to weaken criminal networks and restore stability.
Hope Amid Ongoing Violence
The mass funeral in Cité Soleil revealed both Haiti’s pain and its resilience. Despite fear and loss, residents continue to stand together. Many hope the new UN-backed mission will finally bring peace after years of violence, though challenges remain.
