Cameroon’s 2025 Election: Egari Challenges Biya

Cameroon's Biya

On October 12, 2025, nearly 8 million Cameroonians will vote in a presidential election that could reshape the nation’s future.

Beloboumama Egari, leader of the National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP), is running against his former ally, President Paul Biya.

Egari’s Candidacy

Egari, 80, announced his candidacy on Africanios Television, citing his party’s June 21 decision.

“The UNDP has the constitutional right to compete,” he said, defending his bid against Biya’s long-standing rule.

Experience as Strength

Dismissing age concerns, Egari said, “Longevity brings wisdom. I’ve served Cameroon for decades, and I’m grateful for it.”

His roles as a government minister and six years in the National Assembly give him unique insight, he claims.

Policy Priorities

Egari’s platform focuses on infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and education. He criticized the state of schools, noting,

“After 60 years of independence, children still study under trees.” He aims to modernize these sectors.

Defending His Record

Facing accusations of sharing blame for past government failures, Egari argued his involvement was tied to agreed policies.

He believes the UNDP can now offer better solutions for Cameroon’s challenges.

Electoral Oversight

The Constitutional Council, often questioned for its impartiality, will validate the election results. Egari urged it to uphold fairness and stressed the need for stronger, independent national institutions.

Opposition Dynamics

Egari faces a competitive opposition, including a candidate backed by the Union for Change. He dismissed their selection as lacking credibility, focusing instead on his reform agenda.

Why It Matters

This election could signal a shift in Cameroon’s politics, with Egari’s experience and promises of change appealing to voters frustrated by stagnation.

What’s Next

As the October 2025 vote nears, Egari’s campaign will test whether his vision can sway Cameroonians seeking a new direction for their country.
