London Mayor Khan Challenges Trump Over UN Sharia Remarks

London Mayor Khan

On September 23, 2025, London Mayor Sadiq Khan strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump after he alleged at the UN General Assembly that London is embracing sharia law.

Khan branded Trump “racist, sexist, and Islamophobic,” dismissing the remarks as false and damaging. He emphasized London’s global reputation and diverse appeal.

Trump’s UN Statement

During his address, Trump accused Khan of being a “terrible mayor” and claimed, without evidence, that the city is moving toward Islamic legal systems. He argued that London has “changed drastically” under Khan’s leadership.

Khan’s Counter

Khan, a Labour Party leader, rejected Trump’s claims, citing London’s record growth in U.S. tourism and foreign investment.

“We remain a world leader in culture, sports, and opportunity,” he stated, underscoring the capital’s role as a global hub.

Longstanding Feud

Tensions between Khan and Trump date back to 2016 when Khan opposed Trump’s proposed Muslim travel ban. In 2019, Khan likened Trump to dictators of the 1930s, while Trump retaliated by questioning Khan’s competence and intelligence.

UK Diplomacy

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has sought to balance ties with Washington despite the feud. He recently hosted Trump for an unprecedented second state visit.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Minister Pat McFadden defended Khan, arguing that Trump’s portrayal of London is inaccurate and misleading.

Khan’s Leadership

Since his election in 2016, Khan has promoted inclusivity and diversity in the capital. By rejecting Trump’s accusations, he reinforced London’s standing as a welcoming, world-class city.
