On September 17, 2025, Super Falcons defender Onome Ebi announced her retirement from professional football via a post on X.
The 42-year-old center-back ends a remarkable 20-year journey with Nigeria’s women’s national team.

Ebi shared, “I’m retiring today from professional football. This path brought challenges, triumphs, and lessons that shaped me.
While I step away from playing, I’ll continue to contribute, mentor, and advocate for players.”
Historic Achievements
One of Africa’s most celebrated female footballers, Ebi debuted for the Super Falcons in 2003, earning a record 109 caps for a Nigerian woman.
She helped secure four African Women’s Championship titles in 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
In 2019, she became the first African, male or female, to compete in five FIFA World Cup tournaments.
She broke her own record in 2023, playing her sixth World Cup at age 40, appearing as a substitute in Nigeria’s 3–2 win over Australia.
Ebi also played at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and featured in numerous African Women’s Championship campaigns.
