U.S. officials held talks on Saturday in Kabul with Taliban authorities regarding Americans detained in Afghanistan, the Taliban’s foreign ministry announced.
Adam Boehler, the former Trump administration special envoy for hostage response, and Zalmay Khalilzad, a former U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan, met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.
Focus of the Discussions
In a statement, the Afghan foreign ministry said:
“Both parties emphasized the continuation of talks on various current and future issues in bilateral relations, particularly regarding citizens imprisoned in each other’s countries.”
No U.S. Response Yet
Washington has not released an official comment on the meeting, and Khalilzad did not respond to calls seeking reaction.
High-Profile American Detainee
The most high-profile detainee, according to U.S. officials, is Mahmood Habibi, a naturalized American citizen. However, the Taliban has denied holding him.
Diplomatic Recognition Still Absent
The Taliban government, which regained power in 2021 after two decades of U.S. military intervention, remains unrecognized by Washington.
