Former Benin Republic President, Boni Yayi, has officially ruled out any plan to return to power. He confirmed that he will not contest in the April 2026 presidential election.
Yayi Confirms Focus on Peace and Democracy
In a video message released on Friday, Yayi said he is only available to serve as an elder statesman. His priority, he explained, is to promote peace, stability, and democracy in Benin.
“I am not seeking office again. My focus is on dialogue, peace, and the consolidation of democracy,” Yayi declared.
Ending Speculation of Political Return
Speculation had been rising that Yayi, who served as president between 2006 and 2016, was preparing a comeback.
However, he made it clear that his two-term presidency was final.
Benin’s constitution also prohibits any former president who has already served two terms from seeking re-election.
Ruling Party Selects Romuald Wadagni
Meanwhile, the ruling party has chosen Romuald Wadagni, the current Minister of Finance, as its candidate to succeed President Patrice Talon.
This announcement comes amid concerns that Talon could attempt to extend his stay in office by pushing for a constitutional amendment to allow a third term.
