The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rejected a statement criticizing Super Eagles players Cyriel Dessers and William Troost-Ekong after their 1-1 draw with South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The statement, linked to NFF Communications Director Ademola Olajire, called Dessers “sluggish” and blamed Ekong for an own goal that put South Africa ahead.
On September 10, 2025, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi clarified: “The NFF didn’t approve that statement. We’re unhappy with it.” He stressed that targeting individual players for a team result is unfair.
Supporting Team Unity
Sanusi emphasized that football is a team effort. “Wins and draws belong to the whole squad,” he said. He defended Ekong, the 2023 AFCON MVP, saying, “His own goal was a mistake. Football has these moments.” He also praised Dessers for his role in the team’s play, despite not scoring.
Eyeing World Cup and AFCON
Nigeria, with 11 points, is third in Group C, behind South Africa’s 17. The Super Eagles face Lesotho and Benin Republic next to secure a 2026 World Cup spot. Sanusi remains optimistic about the team’s unity and their 2025 AFCON preparations in Morocco. “Our players and coaches are strong. The NFF and government support them fully,” he said.
Handling the Controversy
Sanusi confirmed the NFF will investigate the unauthorized statement. “We’ll take action internally,” he assured. The NFF had earlier commended Calvin Bassey for his equalizing goal, while noting missed chances in the match.
Why It Matters
This incident highlights the need to protect players from unfair criticism during critical qualifiers. By rejecting the remarks, the NFF aims to boost team morale and focus on World Cup qualification and AFCON 2025 success.
