On September 10, 2025, Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed, leaving millions without power. The blackout hit at 10:20 GMT, according to the Independent System Operator (NISO).

What Caused the Blackout?

A generator failure triggered a system-wide shutdown. This led to a major power loss across Nigeria. NISO shared a statement detailing the issue and their response plan.

Power Restoration in Progress

NISO began restoring electricity, starting in Abuja with the Shiroro hydropower plant. By Wednesday evening, they reported “significant progress” nationwide. Full recovery may still take time.

Nigeria’s Power Challenges

Frequent grid failures plague Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation. Unstable electricity pushes homes and businesses to use costly diesel or petrol generators. This outage highlights the need for better energy systems.

Why It Matters

Blackouts disrupt lives, hurt the economy, and raise costs. Experts call for modern grids and renewable energy to stop future failures. Nigerians continue to face unreliable power.
