Ghana Premier League powerhouse Asante Kotoko have officially confirmed the capture of Brazilian striker Matheus Medieros De Souza in the ongoing winter transfer window. The signing, which was announced on Friday, adds fresh firepower to the Porcupine Warriors’ frontline as they continue their pursuit of domestic glory this season.

The 26-year-old forward arrives on a six-month contract with an option to extend for an additional year, depending on performance. Club officials have expressed confidence that the Brazilian’s qualities will give head coach Seydou Zerbo more attacking options in the coming weeks.

Boost for Kotoko’s attacking department

Kotoko’s statement highlighted Medeiros’ creativity and goal-scoring instincts, describing him as a player whose assists and finishing ability have consistently stood out during his career. His addition is expected to strengthen the team’s striking department, which has at times struggled for consistency this season. With Medeiros in the fold, Kotoko are optimistic about improving their goal tally as they push for the Ghana Premier League title.

Career path before Kotoko

Before sealing his move to Kumasi, Medeiros featured for South Korean third-tier outfit Paju Citizen FC. During his spell in Asia, he managed two goals in 11 appearances. Though not a prolific run, his performances reportedly impressed scouts with his work rate and link-up play, traits Kotoko hope will translate well into the Ghanaian league.

The signing also reflects Kotoko’s growing tradition of recruiting South American talent, particularly from Brazil. Medeiros becomes the third Brazilian to wear the red jersey in recent years, following Michael Vinicius and Fabio Gama, both of whom enjoyed cult status among the Porcupine Warriors’ fan base.

Second signing of the transfer window

The Brazilian striker is Kotoko’s second signing of the January transfer window after the acquisition of midfielder Rashid Nortey from Medeama SC. Nortey, a proven performer in the local league, was brought in to add stability in midfield, and the club now believes the Medeiros-Nortey combination could help balance the squad for the second half of the season.

Fans set sights on Kotoku Royals clash

Kotoko are set to host Kotoku Royals at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday in a matchday 14 fixture of the Ghana Premier League. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00 GMT, and excitement is already building among supporters who are eager to see whether Medeiros will make his much-anticipated debut in front of the home crowd.

The match is considered crucial for Kotoko as they look to maintain momentum in their title defense. A victory would help them close the gap on their rivals at the top of the table, while also setting the tone for the second half of the campaign.

Tradition of ambition

The signing of Medeiros underlines Asante Kotoko’s ambition to remain competitive not just locally but on the continental stage. With the Ghana Premier League entering a decisive phase, the club hierarchy appears determined to give the technical team all the tools necessary to succeed.

For now, the Porcupine Warriors will be banking on Medeiros to settle quickly into the squad and deliver performances that match the club’s high expectations.
