English Championship side Rotherham United have strengthened their squad with the signing of Ghanaian international Tariqe Fosu. The 27-year-old attacker joins the Millers on loan from Premier League club Brentford for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
Loan move to South Yorkshire
Rotherham confirmed the deal on Friday, January 20, announcing that Fosu would remain at the AESSEAL New York Stadium until the end of the season, subject to approval from the English Football League, Football Association and Premier League. The versatile forward has been handed the number 7 shirt.
This move marks manager Matt Taylor’s third signing of the January transfer window as the club looks to add depth and experience to its squad. Currently battling in the lower half of the Championship, Rotherham are aiming to stay clear of the relegation zone and believe Fosu’s arrival will provide a much-needed boost.
A versatile option for the Millers
Fosu, who is comfortable playing as a winger or wing-back on either flank, spent the first half of the season on loan at Stoke City. During his time with the Potters, he made 20 appearances across all competitions, impressing with his pace and work rate.
His adaptability has been one of his strongest assets, making him a valuable addition for a Rotherham side that has struggled with injuries and inconsistency in wide areas. Taylor, who has spoken about the need to improve his attacking options, will be hoping Fosu can inject energy into the squad and contribute with goals and assists.
A player with Premier League experience
Born in London to Ghanaian parents, Fosu began his career at Reading before spells at clubs including Colchester United, Charlton Athletic, and Oxford United. His performances at Oxford earned him a move to Brentford in 2020, where he played an important role in their promotion campaign to the Premier League.
Although he has found game time limited at Brentford since their rise to the top flight, his loan spells have kept him active in the Championship. His move to Rotherham is seen as another opportunity to showcase his quality and remind Brentford of his value ahead of next season.
Ghanaian connection and international ambition
Fosu, who represents Ghana at international level, made his debut for the Black Stars in 2020. He has since featured in several competitive matches and remains eager to re-establish himself as a regular in the national setup. With more playing time at Rotherham, the forward will be hoping to catch the eye of the Ghanaian selectors ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
The move also strengthens the growing Ghanaian presence in English football, as more players from the West African nation continue to make their mark in both the Premier League and Championship.
Looking ahead
For Rotherham, Fosu’s signing is both a short-term boost and a potential game-changer in their fight to secure Championship survival. The Millers will rely on his creativity, versatility and experience as they navigate a difficult second half of the season.
For Fosu himself, the loan spell is an opportunity to regain consistent form and prove his worth to parent club Brentford. If he can impress in South Yorkshire, it could open the door for a return to top-flight football or a permanent move in the summer.
