While accepting his nomination as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2023 governorship election in Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum reflected on the state’s ongoing challenges. He recalled the killing of more than 30 youths around Kala-Balge over the weekend, describing it as a grim reminder of the realities confronting the state.

“This should remind us of the reality of our problems and the need to deliberately unite ourselves towards the recovery, stability, and prosperity of our dear Borno State,” Zulum said.

On Vice-Presidential Speculations

Addressing widespread speculations linking him to the 2023 presidential race, Zulum revealed that some close associates of key presidential aspirants had approached him with offers to serve as a potential running mate.

He admitted to considering the attractive privileges of being Vice President, including political influence, prestige, and access to national platforms. However, he emphasized that the needs of Borno remained his top priority.

Why Zulum Chose Borno Over Abuja

The governor stressed that abandoning his plans for Borno in pursuit of higher office would derail the progress already made in resettling displaced communities and rebuilding infrastructure.

“We have built more than 10,000 houses and resettled over 20 communities, yet thousands remain homeless and in desperate need of food, water, and healthcare,” he explained.

“The killings in Kala-Balge seriously reminded me of the challenges still ahead of us. While becoming Vice President could benefit my personal profile, being re-elected as Governor of Borno State will bring more lasting benefits to our people,” Zulum said.

Commitment to Borno’s Recovery

Zulum reiterated his commitment to working with others to “hastily rebuild Borno State,” describing it as the most urgent need beyond any personal aspiration.

“I prefer to stay back and work drastically for the people of Borno State because, for me, rebuilding Borno is beyond any aspiration,” he affirmed.

Gratitude to Supporters

The governor expressed deep appreciation to APC delegates, party executives, stakeholders, and the people of Borno for their support since 2019.

“I profoundly thank everyone who thought of me worthy of any responsibility. Above everyone, I am eternally grateful to the people of Borno for the mandate given to us back in 2019, and for the overwhelming support we have received,” he said.

Zulum concluded with optimism, expressing confidence that the people of Borno would once again deliver victory to the APC in the forthcoming elections.
