Troops of the 34 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have dislodged a training camp belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Okporo, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.
Operation in Orlu
The operation, which took place on Friday, May 20, followed an exchange of gunfire with the dissidents. During the encounter, two notorious members of the group—who had been on the wanted list of security agencies—were neutralised.
Threat to Communities
According to the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the neutralised members had been terrorising residents across Orlu, Orsu, and Njaba areas.
Destruction of Facilities
Troops destroyed the training camp, including a shrine reportedly used by the separatists for “spiritual fortification.” A local weapons fabrication factory was also uncovered and dismantled.
Weapons Recovered
Recovered items from the factory included:
- Three dane guns
- One locally-fabricated pistol
- One live round of 7.62mm ammunition
- One live cartridge
- Two used shells of 7.62mm (special)
- Objects suspected to be charms and other dangerous weapons
Nwachukwu emphasized that the Nigerian Army remains committed to flushing out criminal elements threatening peace and security in the South-East region.
