A total of four persons have been confirmed dead, while five others were rescued, as emergency teams intensified rescue operations at Freeman Street, Lagos Island, where a storey building under construction collapsed on Saturday.
The building caved in during a heavy downpour in the afternoon, prompting immediate rescue efforts. According to Ibrahim Farinloye, the Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Territorial District, four persons were rescued and two bodies were recovered by 9:22 pm on Saturday.
More Victims Recovered Overnight
As the rescue continued, a male survivor was pulled out around midnight, while two more bodies were recovered at about 1:00 am, bringing the total casualties to four and the number of rescued persons to five.
Background of the Collapsed Building
Reports revealed that the building, originally a bungalow, had been bequeathed to family members before being handed to a developer. The plan was to convert it into a three-storey structure before it tragically collapsed.
At the time of the incident, the structure was at frame stage, with the third suspended concrete slab already in place and internal partitioning ongoing.
No One Missing After Headcount
Emergency officials confirmed that after headcounts and testimonies from survivors, no one was left trapped in the rubble.
