On February 26, 2022, Grand Gedeh County Community College in Zwedru, Liberia, celebrated a significant milestone as it graduated its fifth class of 84 students—58 men and 26 women.
These graduates earned degrees in diverse fields, including Teacher Education, Agriculture, Business Management, Public Administration, Science and Technology, and Health Sciences.
The ceremony was highlighted by a powerful keynote address from Hon. Williametta E. Saydee-Tarr, Liberia’s Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, who emphasized perseverance as the foundation for success.
A Milestone of Achievement
Minister Saydee-Tarr described graduation as a defining moment, marking the transition from one chapter of life to another where graduates step into roles as leaders and innovators. “This is a time of celebration, but also a call to action,” she told the graduates. “Some of you have clear plans, while others are simply thrilled to have reached this point. Regardless, the journey ahead will demand resilience and determination to achieve your goals.”
A Personal Journey of Resilience
Reflecting on her own life, the Minister shared a compelling story of survival during Liberia’s war-torn years. She recounted the fear and uncertainty of being targeted because of her tribal identity, yet her perseverance enabled her to overcome those challenges. “Surviving was no small feat,” she said. After high school, with educational institutions in disarray, she worked briefly for the Liberia National Police and the Liberia Telecommunications Corporation, never imagining she would one day serve as a government minister. “Perseverance is the instinct that drives us forward, even when the path is unclear,” she noted.
Turning Challenges into Opportunities
Minister Saydee-Tarr reminded the graduates that life’s journey is rarely smooth. “Your plans may not unfold as quickly as you hope, and setbacks are part of the process,” she cautioned. Quoting the timeless proverb, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” she urged the graduates to maintain a positive mindset in the face of adversity. “Optimism and a can-do attitude will carry you far, no matter the obstacles,” she added.
The Power of Dedication
The Minister emphasized that perseverance requires unwavering commitment. “It’s not for the faint-hearted,” she said. “Giving up is easy, but pushing through challenges is what leads to true success.” She encouraged the graduates to stay focused, even when faced with doubt or negativity from others, as the rewards of persistence are invaluable.
Commitments to Education and Community
In a generous gesture, Minister Saydee-Tarr pledged to support the academic and infrastructural needs of the college. She committed to providing bachelor’s degree scholarships for the two summa cum laude graduates in Monrovia and funding for eight current students—four men and four women—until their graduation. Additionally, she promised to install a hand pump to address the college’s water scarcity issues, a practical step toward improving campus life.
Acknowledging Support and Dedication
The Minister concluded by praising the college’s faculty for their dedication to education and the families of the graduates for their unwavering support. “Your encouragement has made an immense impact,” she said. “You should be incredibly proud as your graduates embark on new careers or further their education.”
