Israel Adesanya successfully defended his middleweight title at UFC 271 in Houston, Texas, defeating Australian fighter Robert Whittaker on Sunday.

The Nigerian-born champion secured a unanimous decision victory after five intense rounds in front of 6,000 fans at the Toyota Center. The judges’ scorecards read 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47 in favor of Adesanya, giving him his fourth consecutive title defense and improving his record to 22-1.

Judges’ Scorecards and Fight Breakdown

Judges Jacob Montalvo and Doug Crosby awarded Adesanya the first three rounds, while giving Whittaker the final two. Judge Mike Beltran scored all but the second round for Adesanya.

Statistically, Adesanya outlanded Whittaker 79-59 in significant strikes, according to UFC Stats. While Whittaker landed more strikes to the head (38-36), Adesanya dominated in leg strikes (29-13). Whittaker also scored four takedowns, tying Marvin Vettori for the most against Adesanya in a UFC fight.

Pound-for-Pound Rankings

Before the fight, ESPN ranked Adesanya at No. 2 and Whittaker at No. 9 in its MMA pound-for-pound list. In the middleweight division, Adesanya held the top spot with Whittaker right behind him at No. 2.

A Rivalry Rekindled

The victory comes more than two years after Adesanya’s second-round knockout of Whittaker at UFC 243 in October 2019, where he first captured the middleweight title.

With this latest win, Adesanya further cements his legacy as one of the most dominant champions in UFC history.
