The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has requested billions of Naira from the Federal Government for the Super Eagles’ AFCON campaign.
NFF President Amaju Pinnick confirmed the request for an “intervention fund,” a common practice for major tournaments like AFCON and the World Cup.
Financial Difficulties Highlighted
Pinnick admitted financial challenges. “Things are very difficult (financially),” he said. “We hope our request will be approved.”
The federation needs more funds due to a larger 28-player squad and COVID-19 costs.
Budget Defense at National Assembly
During a budget defense, Pinnick stated the NFF needs about 15 billion Naira for AFCON and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Super Eagles must qualify through March playoffs first.
Previous Government Support
In 2019, the government provided nearly a billion Naira for AFCON in Egypt. The current request is higher due to increased expenses.
Implications for Nigerian Football
The funding request underscores financial strains in Nigerian football. Success at AFCON could boost national pride, but dependency on government aid raises sustainability questions.
