The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been placed in Group C of the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers, where they will face Cape Verde, Central African Republic (CAR), and Liberia.
Draw Held in Cairo, Egypt
The group stage draw was conducted on Tuesday at the prestigious Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. A total of 40 African nations were drawn into 10 groups, with four teams in each group. Only the winners of each group will move on to the final round of qualifiers to compete for five available World Cup spots allocated to Africa.
Nigeria Favourites to Top Group C
With a solid World Cup qualification history, the Super Eagles are widely regarded as favourites to top the group. Nigeria has qualified for six of the last seven World Cups and boasts a strong squad with experience and depth.
Although the likes of Cape Verde, Liberia, and CAR are seen as underdogs, the team’s technical crew led by coach Gernot Rohr will be cautious not to underestimate any opponent, especially considering the unpredictability of football on the continent.
Home and Away Format to Decide Group Winners
Each team will play six matches on a home-and-away basis, battling for the top spot in their respective groups. The group stage matches are expected to begin later in the year, subject to CAF and FIFA fixture updates.
Nigerian fans are hopeful that the Super Eagles will maintain their winning momentum and book a place in Qatar 2022.
