Buhari Heads to Ghana for ECOWAS Emergency Summit on Mali Crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari will depart for Ghana on Sunday, May 30, 2021, to participate in an emergency extraordinary summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), convened to address the political instability in Mali.

Summit Called by ECOWAS Chairman, Ghanaian President

According to a statement released on Saturday by presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina, the summit was convened at the request of the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana.

Buhari Briefed by Goodluck Jonathan

Ahead of the summit, President Buhari received a briefing from the ECOWAS Special Envoy and Mediator to Mali, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who updated him on the latest political developments following consultations with key stakeholders in Mali.

Nigeria Condemns Coup, Demands Release of Officials

Nigeria had earlier condemned the May 24, 2021 military coup in Mali, as well as the detention of the country’s interim president and prime minister.

The Nigerian government has called for the immediate and unconditional release of all civilian officials detained during the unrest.
