Legacy of a Sports Enthusiast

Lt. Col. John Sharpe, who passed away at 86 on December 3, 2020, left an indelible mark on Ghanaian sports. A passionate advocate, he was a member of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) and served as GKBA president. His dedication helped elevate both boxing and kickboxing, inspiring athletes across the nation.

Impact on Athletes and Soldiers

Sharpe’s leadership encouraged numerous amateur boxers, particularly soldiers, to excel in their craft. He actively promoted these sports through media engagement and facilitated international opportunities, enabling Ghanaian kickboxers to compete and secure victories abroad during his tenure.

Leadership Transition

Following Sharpe’s tenure, Nii Adote Dzata and Joe Mingle assumed the GKBA presidency, with Yoofi Bonan as the former vice president. Their leadership continues to build on the foundation laid by Sharpe, keeping his vision alive within the association.

Community Tributes

Lawrence Nyanyo Nmai, president of the Pro Fighting Factory, joined club members in offering a touching tribute. The Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation, GKBA, and friends of the club expressed their collective grief, with the sentiment, “Rest In Peace,” echoing through the community.

A Grateful Farewell

Raja Owusu Ansah, the current GKBA president, conveyed deep gratitude, stating, “Our past President, Sir, thank you for your service to your Nation and the Association. Damarifa Due Hede Nyuie.” This farewell reflects the profound respect and appreciation for Sharpe’s contributions.
