Tahith Chong, a 20-year-old Manchester United winger, is nearing a season-long loan move to Bundesliga club Werder Bremen, according to his agent Erkan Alkan.
Speaking to Bild, Alkan stated, “Tahith would like to join the Bundesliga. We’ll talk to Man United about it on Thursday.”
The discussions follow Chong’s limited first-team opportunities at United, with his most recent appearance as a substitute in a 2-1 Europa League win over LASK on August 5, 2020.
Werder Bremen’s Interest
Werder Bremen’s sporting director Frank Baumann confirmed negotiations, noting, “I know the player. We’ll get an attacking winger,” in comments to Bild.
Baumann and head of scouting Clemens Fritz met with Alkan to discuss the potential transfer.
The loan could see Chong replace Kosovo international Milot Rashica, who is linked with clubs like Liverpool, Wolves, Aston Villa, and RB Leipzig.
Chong’s Background
Chong, a Netherlands U21 international, signed a contract extension with Manchester United until 2022 in March 2020, despite interest from Inter.
Having joined United from Feyenoord at 16, he has made five Premier League appearances and six in the Europa League but faces stiff competition from players like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
The move to Werder offers a chance to gain regular first-team experience.
Strategic Fit for Werder
Werder Bremen, who narrowly avoided relegation in the 2019-20 Bundesliga season, see Chong as a technically gifted, fast winger who can play on either flank.
Baumann highlighted his potential, stating, “He’s a talented youngster with real potential,” while noting his defensive skills need development.
The loan aligns with Werder’s strategy to bolster their squad cost-effectively amid financial constraints.
