Shaddat Umar Jallo, former Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, faces assault charges following an altercation during a voter registration exercise.

The incident occurred at a registration center in the Nii Doku Electoral Area, Valco Flat, Ashaiman, where Jallo allegedly slapped Abdul Rahaman, an Electoral Area Coordinator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Details of the Confrontation

The conflict arose when an applicant, unable to speak any Ghanaian language, including Hausa, and communicating only in French, attempted to register with a paper note.

Electoral Commission officials questioned the applicant, prompting Rahaman to intervene for further scrutiny.

Jallo and NDC supporters at the scene reportedly took offense at Rahaman’s actions, leading to Jallo allegedly delivering a “hefty slap” to Rahaman without provocation.

Police Response and Legal Action

Rahaman reported the incident to the Ashaiman Police, who issued a medical report form for hospital examination. Deputy Superintendent of Police George Antwi Tano, the Ashaiman District Crime Officer, confirmed the assault based on the medical report.

Jallo was arrested, charged with assault, and granted police inquiry bail due to the absence of a sitting judge. Authorities stated he would face court once a judge is available.

Prior Controversial Actions

Jallo has a history of contentious behavior, having previously threatened to disrupt Ghana Card registration in Ashaiman if voter IDs were not accepted as valid identification, a stance that drew criticism from the NPP.

Broader Context of Voter Registration Tensions

The incident reflects heightened political tensions during voter registration exercises in Ghana, with Ashaiman known for its strong NDC support. Such clashes underscore challenges in maintaining order at registration centers, particularly when eligibility disputes arise.
