On July 8, 2020, seasoned football administrator George Amoako was appointed Executive Chairman of King Faisal, just two weeks after leaving his role as CEO of Kumasi rivals Asante Kotoko.
The announcement came after Amoako finalized negotiations with King Faisal’s owner, Alhaji Grunsah, to lead the Kumasi-based Ghana Premier League club.
A Return to Familiar Ground
This marks Amoako’s second stint with King Faisal, a club owned by the outspoken Alhaji Grunsah.
With over 30 years of experience in Ghanaian football, primarily with Kumasi-based teams, Amoako brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role.
He confirmed the appointment to Oyerepa 100.7FM, stating, “I will run the day-to-day activities as Executive Chairman, while Alhaji Grunsah remains the founder, bankroller, and President.”
Plans to Transform the Club
Amoako spent the two weeks prior to his appointment discussing strategies with Grunsah to modernize King Faisal and elevate its status in Ghanaian football.
His goal is to steer the club toward success, leveraging his extensive experience to improve operations and performance.
King Faisal had recently returned to the Ghana Premier League after years in the lower divisions, making Amoako’s leadership pivotal.
Departure from Asante Kotoko
Amoako’s exit from Asante Kotoko followed the formation of a new board by the club’s life patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Having served as Kotoko’s CEO since August 2018, Amoako expressed disappointment over his abrupt dismissal, telling Wontumi Radio, “This was my worst experience at Kotoko.
I’ve served the club multiple times, but this exit wasn’t amicable.”
He vowed not to return to Kotoko in any official capacity, though he remains a supporter.
Amoako’s Football Legacy
Amoako’s three-decade career includes various roles at Asante Kotoko and a position on the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council as a Premier League representative.
His move to King Faisal offers a fresh opportunity to apply his expertise, with the club expressing optimism about his impact.
“We welcome George Amoako, who brings a rich vein of experience,” King Faisal posted on their official Facebook page.
Looking Ahead
Amoako’s appointment signals hope for King Faisal fans, who expect his leadership to boost the club’s competitiveness in the Ghana Premier League.
As he takes on the challenge of transforming the “Insha Allah” boys, his experience and vision will be key to achieving long-term success.
