The Federal Ministry of Health has confirmed Nigeria’s first case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Lagos State, reported on February 27, 2020.
This marks the initial detection in the country since the global outbreak began in China in January 2020.
The patient, an Italian national working in Nigeria, arrived from Milan, Italy, on February 25, 2020.
Testing at the Virology Laboratory of Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) network, confirmed the diagnosis.
The individual is currently stable, showing no severe symptoms, and is receiving care at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.
Government Response and Preparedness
The Nigerian government has intensified efforts to control and contain the outbreak through the Federal Ministry of Health.
The NCDC-led multi-sectoral Coronavirus Preparedness Group has activated its national Emergency Operations Centre and is collaborating with Lagos State health officials to manage the case and enforce strict control measures.
Since the first cases emerged in China, Nigeria has been enhancing its preparedness, leveraging government resources to address this situation effectively.
Authorities are actively tracing all contacts the patient had since entering the country to prevent further spread.
Health Advice for Citizens
Most COVID-19 cases result in mild illness with full recovery, though it can be more severe for the elderly and those with chronic conditions.
The Ministry urges all Nigerians to prioritize health and hygiene with the following precautions:
- wash hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizer
- maintain at least 1.5 meters (5 feet) distance from those coughing or sneezing
- stay home or avoid crowds if experiencing persistent cough or sneezing
- practice good respiratory hygiene by covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing, then disposing of tissues promptly
- seek medical advice by calling the NCDC toll-free number (0800-970000-10) if unwell with fever, cough, or breathing difficulties—avoid self-medication.
Public Awareness and Updates
Citizens are encouraged to stay informed via official channels, including the Lagos State Ministry of Health, NCDC, and Federal Ministry of Health broadcasts on TV and radio.
The Ministry warns against spreading misinformation on social media that could incite fear or panic.
The NCDC will provide regular updates and implement all necessary measures to curb any outbreak.
This coordinated response aims to protect public health and ensure accurate information reaches the population as the situation evolves.
