On January 19, 2020, Nigerian Entertainment Today (theNETng) published a report naming MultiChoice Nigeria’s DStv and GOtv as the country’s leading Pay TV service providers for home entertainment.

The report, based on a survey conducted during the 2019 festive season (November 2019 to January 2020), highlights the platforms’ popularity among Nigerian viewers.

Survey Reveals TV Viewing Trends

The independent survey, covering hundreds of Nigerians across 27 states, found that 52% of respondents preferred watching TV at home during the festive season.

Among cable TV subscribers, 48% chose DStv as their top platform, especially during Christmas and New Year.

Meanwhile, 33% favored GOtv for their TV content. Over 80% of respondents were under 35, showing TV’s strong appeal to younger audiences.

What Nigerians Watched Most

The report outlined popular content during the holidays:

  • Foreign movies: 47% of viewers watched international films on DStv and GOtv.

  • Nigerian movies: 12% tuned into local content on channels like Africa Magic.

  • Sports: 16% enjoyed football and other sports, with Premier League matches being a major draw.

  • Music shows: 11% watched music programs.

Only 30% of respondents said they spent the festive season visiting family, friends, or partying, making TV the top activity.

New Packages Boost Viewership

MultiChoice’s recent launch of DStv Confam and DStv Yanga packages is set to increase viewership. These affordable packages offer a mix of local and international content, catering to diverse tastes.

The report noted DStv’s live sports broadcasts, particularly Premier League games, as a key attraction. “Football fans were hooked on matches featuring top English clubs on Boxing Day and into the New Year,” the report said.

Why DStv and GOtv Lead

TheNETng report praised DStv and GOtv for their diverse content, including movies, sports, music, and local shows.

Their reliability and variety have made them Nigeria’s top Pay TV providers. MultiChoice continues to innovate, ensuring subscribers enjoy quality entertainment at home.
